Giving Back, One Back at a Time

In this modern society it can be so easy to get caught up in our day to day lives -- grocery shopping, walking the dog, getting to the gym -- that we often forget to take a step back, slow down, and think about what we can do for our communities.

Dr. Don Smallie, DC, however, has not forgotten. Every Wednesday, each week, for the last twenty years, he has treated anywhere between 20-50 patients. All for free.

Saint Mary’s Medical Center is a facility in Stockton that caters to the homeless, working poor, seasonal migrants, and uninsured. The clinic has been running since 1965, all staff are volunteers, all services are free, and the clinic is open Monday through Friday.

Dr. Smallie has always strived to help those that were not as fortunate as he. When he found out about the clinic he went straight to the director and asked what he could do to help. He started immediately and, each week, regardless of the number of people that come in for Dr. Smallie’s treatment, he always sees each patient, no matter how late he has to stay. Now many are even regulars, looking forward to each Wednesday.

Not only does Dr. Smallie donate his time and expertise, he has secured a donation for essential vitamins such as magnesium, the omegas, and vitamin B, which he distributes to his patients. Dr. Smallie even takes time to talk to the medical assistant students that intern at the clinic. He teaches them the four points of correctness, so no mistakes are made, as well as how important it is to offer good quality care. Dr. Smallie spends extra time to reinforce what they have already learned, but, despite the serious business, always takes time for a good joke, having fun, and, of course, lots of hugs.

Says MaryAnn, head nurse at the clinic, “Wednesday is not the same without Dr. Smallie. We are grateful he continues to come, rain or shine, and he is so sweet with the staff. I remember even once when he had a major surgery, he was back in less than two weeks. We are very lucky to have him.”

Dr. Smallie graduated from the prestigious Palmer College when he was only 20 years old. Now with 40 years’ experience in personal injury cases, he is also a registered QME. As one of the newest members of the Doctors on Liens network, we are so proud to highlight such a giving and caring individual.
