Having a surgery done, however necessary it may be, is never a fun process to heal from. The healing process usually takes anywhere from six to eight weeks depending on the severity of the surgery and what you had done. Of course, at times, it can be less than that, and it can also take much longer depending on your circumstances. Dr. Adin Dadian DPT of Phoenix Physical Therapy in Rancho Cucamonga and Glendale, California regularly works with patients after they recover from a surgery, whether it was done for reasons to ease general pain or due to injuries suffered in a car accident. We spoke with Dr. Dadian about how to help ease the pain and buckling after a knee surgery in his Quick Tip of the Day.

Following along with Dr. Dadian and read on below for more:

Dr. Dadian explained that after knee surgery, many patients are referred to his office claiming that they have experienced issues walking or have pain, especially near the interior of the knee (which is pretty common after a knee surgery). Because of this, Dr. Dadian has a reliable quick exercise that can help to relieve knee pain and buckling after a knee surgery.

To follow along with his exercise, you will need a ball of some kind (roughly around the size of a soccer ball). Place your ball against the wall and push your hurting knee back into the ball. The ball should be in between your knee and the wall. Put the opposite (not hurting) foot and leg forward. Then, lightly push your hurt knee back against the ball and squeeze it into the wall. This will squeeze your quad muscle. Hold it for 10 seconds before letting go. Try to do this exercise at least three times a day to get your movement back and to have relief from your knee pain. This exercise will help to get the pressure off your knee and therefore, have you moving again.

As always, I will say that if you are experiencing pain from this, please stop and speak with your doctor before proceeding.

All in all, if you’ve been injured in an accident or are experiencing knee pain after surgery, it’s imperative that you speak with Dr. Dadian DPT or any of our doctors who work on a lien basis to help you on your journey back to health.
