For one reason or another, as we go through our daily lives, we continually challenge our bodies and put ourselves in less-than-ideal positions. For instance, we almost always find ourselves hunching forward from the top of our back for one reason or another. I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but that is terrible for back health. Regular hunching can cause pains and strains on your muscles that eventually can lead to back stiffness and weakness.
So, we spoke with Dr. Hagop Blikian, DC of Blikian Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Glendale, California, about a simple daily activity that tends to take a toll on our backs. That activity: brushing our teeth. Dr. Blikian explains that usually, when you wake up in the morning and groggily go to brush your teeth, you will likely find yourself hunching forward as you do so. As mentioned, this causes immense stress on your back which eventually leads to stiffness. So, what can we do to fix this? Follow along with Dr. Blikian’s Quick Tip Video to see an example of what to do up close:
According to Dr. Blikian, one of the best things you can do to keep yourself from hunching while you brush your teeth is to put a small stool in front of yourself. After doing so, place one leg on top of the stool, and this should take your back out of the picture. This way, you utilize your core and legs to keep yourself up right instead of using your back to hunch forward.
By doing this daily, you’re saving your back from daily strain, one small bit at a time, something that could potentially generate lasting results.
